How many sq. ft. of carpet can one person clean in an hour with a Whittaker machine at a normal pace?
Carpet/Furniture Care - Angel Ceballos
Answer
Much will depend on the soiling of the carpet which will be determined by the frequency of interim cleaning.
Whittaker say light soiling encapsulation can be done at a rate of 3000 to 4000 sf/hr. Medium soiling slows to 2000 to 3000 sf/hr, and heavy soiling (restorative cleaning) will move at the same pace, but with hot water extraction added at a rate of 500 to 900 sf/hr.
The recommended operation includes an initial damp spray with the encapsulating solution, working it in and pile lifting with the Whittaker dual counter-rotating brush machine, allowing a few minutes of drying time, and removal of the encapsulated soils with a good vacuum cleaner.
Hallways and open spaces can approach 10,000 sf/hr and that is good coverage for interim cleaning of carpet. Done frequently enough to prolong the periods between restorative cleanings, this should prove an effective means of carpet maintenance.
