Dr. Berry has nailed it (re: Green Cleaning & Science, cover story January 2011 Cleanfax magazine).
Recall the debate when the state of New York proposed using only cold water in schools for cleaning, not because it cleaned better (as some insisted), when it did not, but because the energy conservation imagined was significant.
The savings resulted, in many cases, because the hot water was being generated by the large building heating boilers and not by smaller, close-by heating systems. What a loss of good cleaning time and efficiency for a phony "green" conservation reason.
I especially resent the implication Berry denounces in Myth #2, that we are going green because in the past we were major polluters of the indoor environment and now have seen the light shed by the "green gurus." What a lot of nonsense!
I was using a low moisture, low residue bonnet system long before there was any conservation movement (30+ years ago). We still use a truckmount to rinse and flush floor coverings, leaving as little residue as possible.
We have never allowed a multiplicity of chemicals in janitorial storage closets, and anything "heavy handed" (acid bowl cleaners, strippers, etc.) is kept out of the way of the untrained.
How stupid and degrading to the entire industry to imply that what we are doing now is to offset the years of damage we have previously done to the indoor environment by inept chemical and procedure management!
Let''s continue to assault the uninformed "greenwash" out there.

To the Editor:
I just wanted to drop you a quick note to tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed the Dr. Berry article Cleanfax ran (in January.) It was very timely and I was pleased to read it.
I''m sure it hasn''t come without some interesting commentary from folks around the industry. When UNC released Dr. Berry''s findings on our program versus traditional housekeeping, we received month''s worth of e-mails and telephone calls that ranged from very positive to downright hostile.
In my opinion this type of discourse is much needed in our industry. Keep fighting the good fight.

To the Editor:
I enjoyed reading Dr. Berry''s article and think that he is spot on with 90 percent of what he has written.
There is so much misinformation being peddled for the sake of conforming to some standard of green cleaning that we almost hate to use the phrase and do so only sparingly.
I, for one, am happy to see this opinion/discussion put into print and hope that it creates a healthy dialog within the cleaning industry.
I believe it is timely and appropriate to refine what green cleaning means or should mean.
