Everyone knows that if you are a small business owner, that you have it easy. You live an enchanted life. You call the shots, do what you want, never have a worry.
Right?
Those thoughts might originate from someone who has never been challenged by operating a small business, but they rarely are uttered from a mouth belonging to an entrenched, veteran entrepreneur.
There are some things, though, that you can do so that your business is more enjoyable to you — that is, if it isn''t already.
Do it your way
No matter what, it''s your business.
When your peers give you advice, they are usually adamant about how you should do things. That''s fine, it''s what they believe, and if they aren''t passionate about what they believe, they shouldn''t be in business.
Be sure to plot your goals in life, and make your business the type that will help you get where you want to be.
Make your business work for you, not the other way around. Make yourself the "ship''s captain" and steer your business the way you want it to go.
Love what you do
There are many carpet cleaning business owners who want to just clean carpet. That''s what they love to do — building their business is important, of course, but they want to do the dirty work.
Others want to get off the truck as quickly as possible and do the management and marketing, letting others do the actual cleaning.
Both scenarios are fine. It''s all about what you want to do. And you can do both if that''s your decision.
If you don''t love what you do, figure out what''s wrong, what''s holding you back. You might be in a "rut" and aren''t sure how to get out of it. That can be a tough spot, but many business owners recover by "mixing it up" and changing their routine, adding a new service, trying a different approach to marketing, networking with local peers… anything to freshen up their business lives.
Make an impact
Are you a community player? Do you get involved with local groups, activities and events that can help you promote your business?
It can really make a difference. There are many opportunities for you to get involved in the community and help others but at the same time help yourself.
Some say they aren''t sure which groups to get involved with, but with a simple Internet search, you can find many local organizations that need help.
You don''t have to part with cash that you can''t spare, but you can offer to donate services that will benefit others and also give you the opportunity for marketing exposure.
Not sure this is for you? Look at some of the more successful businesses in the industry. They typically are heavily involved with their communities. If it works for them, it can work for you.
