15 ways to better employee management
by Dennis Klager
Most companies and facilities have employees to rely upon.
A few learn to manage them. Many don’t, and they deal with the same issues, over and over, day after day, with little to no change.Often, it’s blamed on the employees.
It took me years to understand that my company would never be better than my ability to lead or manage it.
As I got better as a manager, so did my company.
Some say management is easy. Some of it can be, depending on your personality, while some of it is definitely not.
It can, sometimes, take more wisdom than that of Solomon.
There are mediocre managers, good managers and great managers.
Most are mediocre, some are good and a few are great.
Generally, the great ones got that way with a lot of time and a great deal of study. It’s not easy getting there.
For those who are a cleaning technician and a manager, you have a double load to bear.
One of the most important things I had to learn was how to manage myself, so I could, in turn, manage others.
Following are a few laws of management that, when followed, can improve your management effectiveness dramatically.
These are certainly not the answer to all management problems (it’s a big subject) and not in any particular order.
1. Be the kind of business-person you want your employees to be. They imitate.2. Praise. If you want to see a behavior repeated, praise it. If you want to see a good behavior disappear, ignore it.3. Follow your own rules.4. Inspect your employees’ work: Show up, unannounced, at times when least expected.5. Show them. They may not be seeing what you are thinking. Have them show you what you just showed them. Show them again.6. Be consistent. If five minutes late was punishable yesterday, it’s also punishable today.7. Give yourself and your people written guidelines or procedures to follow. Guidelines make you and your employees more consistent. Managers and employees need consistency and structure. 8. Apply your guidelines equally to all. This will make you fair.9. Give your people as much education as you can. The more they know, the more they can help you. Never be afraid that an employee will know more than you. That’s a good thing!10. Make them feel important. Give value to what they do and say. Some of the most successful people throughout history had this quality. People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel.11. Enforce the rules! Humans respect discipline. We don’t particularly care for being disciplined, but we respect those who care enough about us to make us do the right thing. (nobody said it’s easy)12. Develop volunteers. People who see why they should do it, because you have shown them the benefits. If you are "managing" every detail of your employees’ day, you are working way too hard.13. Spend more time investigating the people you hire. Hire someone with the values you need them to have. We hire too many bad employees because of lack of effort in hiring. You cannot give someone the qualities that Mom and Dad never gave them. You don’t have the time or the skill.14. Be honest, with yourself.15. Be honest, with your people.http://www.advantagecleaningteam.com/ or http://www.janiservu.com/
