Unlike other stemware, wine glasses are specifically designed to enhance the experience of drinking wine. Stemware designed for red wine, for example, usually has a large, broad bowl to better capture the bouquet. White wine stemware, on the other hand, is narrower so the delicate aromas of the whites are contained.

The visual appeal of wine is also considered in the design; the way the light plays on the liquid, and the “legs” and “tears” that form on the inside of the glass when you swirl the wine around in it, which also enhances the aroma. But the wine glass won’t enhance your experience if it is not clean––fingerprints, leftover wine and marks can mar the visual appeal. Very fine wine glasses are made of delicate crystal; for that reason alone, they require special care.

Steps

Crystal wine glasses

Wine connoisseurs agree that crystal stemware should be washed in very hot water by hand. Not all experts agree that dish soap should be used, but if it is used, be sure to rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue so that it doesn’t interfere with the taste and bouquet of the wine.

  1. 1

Rinse the glasses in very hot water.

  2. 2

Use a drop of mild, unscented dish detergent for each glass and partially fill each one with hot water.

  3. 3

Hold the glass carefully by the bowl and insert a sponge.

  4. 4

Turn the glass around while holding the sponge in place. The best is if you have a sponge that is attached to a long handle so that your hand is not actually inside the glass.

  5. 5

Wash the outside of the glass by holding the bowl with one hand and washing the outside of the bowl, the stem and the base with the sponge. It is best not to hold the glass by the stem as they are often delicate and can break easily.

  6. 6

Rinse each glass thoroughly, inside and out, with hot water.

  7. 7

Allow your glasses to air dry, right side up, or hand-dry them using a lint-free towel, or unscented paper towels.

Glass wine glasses

  1. 1

Prefer dishwasher-proof wine glasses over hand-wash only if you're not keen on constant careful washing as outlined in the previous section. Doing so will save you time and effort.

  2. 2

Use the dishwasher. Wine glasses made from glass can be washed in the dishwasher and provide easy care. For non-greasy glasses, wash them on the shortest cycle without detergent. For dirtier glasses, use a little detergent but no rinsing aid. Open the door at the end of the cycle to let the glasses air dry without humidity.[1]

    • If purchasing glasses that are intended for cleaning in the dishwasher, choose stems that are neither too fragile nor too long.

  3. 3

Hand wash. For hand-washing, use hot water and a minimum amount of detergent.

  • To avoid any chance of soap residue remaining in the glasses, you can opt to steam clean your stemware by holding the glass upside down over a pan of boiling water so that the steam cleans it.
  • If hot water and mild detergent can’t get your glasses clean, use baking soda to remove any stubborn wine residue. Dissolve a small amount of soda with hot water and let it stand in the glass for a few minutes. The soda will dissolve any residual wine adhering to the glass.
  • It is best to store wine glasses upside down on a wine rack. If no rack is available, be sure the glasses are thoroughly dry before placing them on a shelf, right side up.
  • Non-crystal wine glasses can be put in a dishwasher but be sure to remove them promptly and dry them with a lint-free cloth.
  • Microfiber cloths are ideal for drying wine glasses.
  • Avoid drying your glasses with scented paper towels. The glasses can absorb the scent, which will interfere with.

  • Never stick your hand inside the wine glass to clean it, especially if it is made of delicate crystal. The glass can easily shatter from the pressure. Use a sponge attached to a long handle.
  • Avoid using bleach or scented dish detergent to clean wine glasses. The slightest odor residue can affect the taste of the wine.
  • Use caution if you steam clean a wine glass; don’t let your hand get too close to the steam
