A service provider to the claims industry once asked me about the employment outlook for adjusters.
You might think that’s a peculiar question, but there is good reason for vendors to know this.

After the raging hurricanes of 2005, thousands left other careers to become adjusters to take on the voluminous claims generated by the storms. But, after several years with minimal storm activity, many of these “emergency” adjusters have been left with little to do.
Based on the phone calls I receive almost daily from unemployed adjusters or people wanting to transition into an adjusting career, I’d say the employment outlook is not good.
Nevertheless, the U.S. Department of Labor states that in 2006 there were about 350,000 claims related jobs and that number is expected to grow to 370,000 by the year 2016.
The value in knowing this information is that you will better understand where adjusters stand in the present business environment.
Are they secure in their position? Are they likely to be less conciliatory on questionable issues? Are they loyal to their employers?
All of this has an impact on how adjusters settle claims and how they deal with contractors.
