One of my janitors used toilet bowl acid in a restroom sink and spilled some onto the Formica counter top and now there is a whitish dull tint on part of the top. I tried using multi foam, and stainless steel cleaner thinking it would at least bring back the shine, but that did not work. Any suggestions?

The Formica® website warns us:
DO NOT use cleaners nor compounds containing strong acids or strong bases on laminate surfaces. These may mar, etch, corrode and/or permanently discolor or damage laminate surfaces.
Their recommendation is:
• Harsh chemicals can lighten the color of laminate permanently, but the damage can sometimes be masked by applying lemon oil or self stripping waxes, such as Pledge® or Plexus®.
Try that and see if it helps correct the condition. However, I suspect that a 23% solution of HCl will have done some permanent damage.
Need I comment on the unwisdom of using acid bowl cleaner on restroom fixtures with chrome plating nearby on faucets and drains?
